I enjoy Shopping
Perhaps you are like me.
I enjoy shopping and that doesn’t mean that I buy anything, at all!
For some of us its entertainment and one can get lost looking at the latest mobile phone, digital camera, laptop, speaker system, you name it. Almost trance like.
In point of fact I get totally tranced!
It’s hypnotic!
Sundays are a good day to go shopping for me. As a kid, Sundays were an absolute bore when there was nothing to do. Now if there is nothing else to do ….. I can go Shopping!
It’s a walk. Its colourful, it’s energetic, it’s a time to trance out and stimulate my imagination. It’s fun!
SO…… why, when I having so much fun, does this pleasant experience get wrecked by one particular, irritating question………
“Can I help you?”
Did I ask for help? (NO!)
I was just enjoying a daydream about this particular product and YOU woke me up!
I was getting excited about the possibility of buying this product and all I had to do was to convince my wife and I was half way there when YOU INTERUPTED with “Can I help you?”……
…..conversation interrupted, potential sale gone and YOU don’t get it!
YOU just lost a sale.
Trying Hard to Buy Something
Some years ago a company was marketing an expensive product under its own brand name, at a reasonable price. The manufacturer was well known and totally reputable and here was my chance to own something that I had wanted for a long time!
I said to my wife “Have a look at this“…..
….almost immediately, we were interrupted with “Can I help you?”
I replied “No thanks, I’m fine“…..
My wife replied “It’s pretty big. Have we got room for it?”
Aha! A question. She can be persuaded. Great!
I replied “You can wall mount these…….
…..before, I finished speaking another “Can I help you?” from another assistant. I said firmly “No thank you!” I thought ‘if you had your eyes open you would have seen that I have just been asked that!‘….
“Oh can you? I didn’t realise that“, she said, “But it is expensive, isn’t it?“
“Well actually, X’s own brand costs £y and this is made by them specifically for this lot.
It’s a heck of a saving. What a good deal!” (Working my case)….…AGAIN ….”Can I help you?” (Strike 3. You’re OUT!) I replied “NO!”. I thought ‘What is it, with you people? Go away!‘……
“Oh well“, she said, “we better get on“.
Not to be deterred, I asked her, “So, what do think about getting one of these?“
She said ….
……….. YOU DON’T NEED TO GUESS what happened next ……. “Hi, I’m the manager. Thought I’d let you know that these are made by Z”.”That’s nice”, I said sarcastically and walked off.He had completely ignored my wife and he had interrupted her. She left at that point and he didn’t even notice!
I THOUGHT ‘Do I look like a complete idiot? I know who made it! I’m not stupid! I almost had that, then!’
No surprise they went broke AND probably, today, whilst money is not circulating, those retailers who are still behaving that way are going broke NOW.
There are lot of them going broke, aren’t there?
